Dolphins Vs. Steelers

Posted by glassonion on September 8, 2006

I could have sworn that the Dolphins would pull this one out. The game started a bit slow but I really didn’t care as I was finally watching a meaningful NFL game. Some observations:

I really am starting to like Wes Welker. I always had a soft spot for him ever since this wide receiver stepped in for Olindo Mare and kicked a couple of extra points and kicked off during a game a couple years ago. I have a feeling he will be making some huge plays on special teams week in and week out and will even come up with some huge catches this year. He is the Dolphins secret weapon.

Ronnie Brown however is the not so secret weapon. Sure he had a couple of TD’s but nothing really impressed me. He has so much riding on his shoulders this year but I see him as pretty much the second coming of Lamar Smith. He will get his carries, yards and TD’s but it is totally by default. The Dolphins simply don’t have enough depth to even think about giving it to someone else.

It was nice to see Charlie Batch have a good solid game. I was just waiting for him to struggle so that I would have the chance to refer to him as “Charlie Be-atch” but alas his performance spared him of this. I also couldn’t help but notice that either his helmet was way too small for him or he happens to have the largest head ever on a human being. He did throw a couple of great passes and the Heath Miller touchdown pumped me up.

In general, I don’t think that I can recall a team imploding in as short a time period as the ‘Phins did tonight. Jeez, they had the lead and then WHAM, the whole game goes shit-house on them all set in motion by Heath Millers 87 yard reception. By the way, he was TOTALLY out of bounds and Nick Saban should have thrown the red hanky way earlier than he did.

All in all, a pretty good start to the season.

T.O. In Big D

Posted by glassonion on June 7, 2006

So the Cowboys went through mini-camp.  So far so good methinks.  Being a long time Cowboys fan I don't know what to expect this year.  I really don't want to make it such a huge deal that this is pretty much our last shoot at doing anything before we go back to six and tensville.  Terrell Owens will play his one quiet year and Bill Parcells will make that final push before he rides off into the sunset leaving another team in his wake.

Will it be enough this year?  Should I not have vomited with joy when I saw that Peter King picked the Cowboys to win it all?  Should I have not named my first born son after Rafael Septien?

These questions and more to be answered in time.

The NFL: It’s A Numbers Game

Posted by glassonion on May 16, 2006

I have to put my foot down here. I don't think the NFL should change their uniform numbering policy. According to KFFL's Hot Of The Wire, the NFL has changed the policy. Of course this will become known as the "Reggie Bush Rule" should it come to pass that he gets to keep using #5.

Call me old fashion, but there is just something really wrong with this. I mean I still haven't gotten used to seeing so many wide receivers with numbers in the teens and not in the 80's. Seriously, one of the reason's I can't stand to watch college football is because there are defensive ends wearing #9, linebackers wearing #34 and running backs wearing #5. It just doesn't feel right to me. I mean come on, how gross did it look to see Heath Shuler back in the 90's playing QB wearing #21? (By the way, is it now going to be the honorable Heath Shuler soon?

This one's a stretch, but it might actually have negative effect on refs calling the game. The whole reason the numbering system came into play was so that refs would be able to tell what position each player is a bit easier. What if there is a game on the line and Reggie Bush get tackled extra hard? Are the refs going to call roughing the passer? Alright, maybe I am just being a big fat baby, but it COULD happen.

Feeling Drafty

Posted by glassonion on April 30, 2006

There were two picks that really shot out at me as some day 1 draft steals. Matt Lienart going to the Cards and Jimmy Williams going to the Falcons.

Sure, Kurt Warner can sling the ball still, but he is always injured. The Cards have really set themselves up for the future. Ithink Lienart will ultimatley have the most success in the NFL. I don't follow college football at all, but everything I have heard about Jimmy Williams is that he has the potential to be a great shutdown CB. It looks like the Falcons are well on their way to having one shutdown CB in D'angelo Hall and now they might just have the best CB tandem in a year or two. They have been addressing the defense really hard this off season and with that monstrous running game? All the makings of a team that is going to be hard to beat.
